The Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies (OAAS) is marking their 179th anniversary.
Stirling, ON – The Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies (OAAS) proudly hosted its annual convention and annual meeting, bringing together nearly 1,200 delegates from across Ontario, as well as representatives from Quebec, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. The event, held February 20-22, 2025, in Richmond Hill, Ontario, featured an engaging lineup of educational sessions, keynote speakers, awards presentations, and networking opportunities, reaffirming the vital role of agricultural societies in their communities. A convention highlight was the presentation of awards recognizing outstanding contributions to Ontario’s fair industry and agricultural societies celebrating significant anniversaries. “The enthusiasm and passion shown by our delegates reflect the strength of Ontario’s agricultural societies,” said Heather Owens, OAAS President.
This year’s convention featured two dynamic keynote speakers, Chris Cummings and Ian Tyson, offering insights into leadership, sharing our passion, and the future of agricultural societies. In addition to over 60 seminars and roundtables, there were pre-convention workshops, including judging schools, mental health and risk management training. The OAAS offered their two-day “Building Community Leaders” workshop hosted jointly with the Rural Ontario Institute (ROI), which focused on leadership, governance, risk management practices, and community engagement skills to assist participants in strengthening their societies and communities.
The eight OAAS-Central Canada Exhibition Association Scholarship recipients were introduced at the annual meeting. The Youth of the Month winners were celebrated for their dedication and achievements within their agricultural societies. 75 Ambassadors representing agricultural societies across the province participated in another successful Ambassador Program.
Three evenings of entertainment showcased talented performers, inspiring fairs to bring fresh, exciting acts to their own events. Over 70 businesses and organizations participated in the vendor and ag-awareness tradeshows.
The annual meeting was held Saturday afternoon, with over 500 people in attendance. The OAAS was pleased to recognize Kathryn Lambert for her 20 years of service. Senator Robert Black was also in attendance to speak and award King Charles III Coronation Medals to Vince Brennan and Meredith Brophy.
The OAAS announced its new executive team, which includes Heather Owens, President; Jessica Cook, 1st Vice President; Lorna Wilson, 2nd Vice President; and Glen Syme, Past President. These individuals and the Board of Directors will lead the organization in continuing its mission to provide leadership, guidance, education and resources for its member societies across Ontario.
“This convention is not only a time to learn and collaborate but also to celebrate the dedication of the volunteers and professionals who make our agricultural societies thrive,” said Vince Brennan, OAAS Executive Director.
