Frequently Asked Questions Re: OAAS Convention 2019

Why did the OAAS decide to relocate for 2019? The Fairmont Royal York has been the home for the OAAS Convention for over the past 75 years, however the operating cost for the Fairmont property continues to increase annually and unfortunately these increasing costs are affecting the decisions of our Ontario Fair members being able to attend the OAAS Convention. With the aggressive renovation scheduled at the Fairmont Royal York during the 2019 convention, there would be limited spacing available for our programming and scheduling.

Why did the OAAS choose the Toronto North Sheraton in Richmond Hill? The OAAS has attempted to seek an alternate location for the annual convention in past, however unfortunately locating a facility and property that suits and meets the needs of nearly 1000 people, under one roof, proved to be a challenging task at an affordable rate.

The OAAS is thrilled that the Sheraton Toronto North met these needs. With an adjoining Best Western Parkway Hotel Toronto North, Richmond Hill, the 1000 delegates can stay under one roof, with adequate meeting, tradeshow, competition & entertainment space.

This property is still located within the GTA, conveniently minutes off the 401, 404 & 407, offering 1200 free parking spaces and approximately 10 minutes from the Richmond Hill GoTrain Station.

When is the 2019 & 2020 Convention? The dates in 2019 are February 14-16 & February 13-15, 2020.

How many years have the OAAS agreed to stay at the Toronto North Sheraton property? Through negotiations the OAAS and the Sheraton has agreed to maintain the same pricing for the next 2 years, up to and including 2020. A full evaluation will be completed after the 2019 convention to determine any future agreements, past the 2020 event.

How do we make our room reservations? The room block at both properties will be open and available for booking as of May 1st . To book at the Best Western Parkway Hotel Toronto North, Richmond Hill, please call the hotel directly at (905) 881-2121. To book a guest room at the Sheraton, Toronto North, a link will be provided on May 1st to complete the online booking process, alternatively you can also call the hotel directly to complete your reservations. 905-881-2121 (same phone # as the Best Western reservations) Room availability is first come, first serve.

The room block at both properties will be held until January 14th, 2019. Rooms that are not booked at this time will be released to the general public.

Are we the only group in the hotel? The OAAS was thrilled to be offered exclusivity of the two properties, if the room block is filled by January 14.

Someone on our fair board may have mobility issues, any tips for them? From speaking with the hotel, it is recommended that these guest book at the Sheraton property (rather than the Best Western) – although these two properties are joined in the main lobby, there are a few small steps to maneuver. Overall the programming and venues within the convention are all much closer in proximity, hoping mobility will be less of an issue throughout the property.

What are the room rates at the two properties?  The chart below identifies the room rates that are available at the two properties. The guest rooms at the Best Western include 2 double beds and a fridge. Traditional & Premium Rooms at the Sheraton include either 2 Queen Beds and/or King Bed with a pull-out couch, and fridge. Guest rooms including Jacuzzi Suite and below (on the chart) will also include a microwave in your room. Some rooms in the Sheraton are adjoining, however this is not guaranteed.
